In 2018 First Arabic Presbyterian Church created the Arabic Outreach Center, a separate non-profit organization, to help Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants adjust and thrive in American culture. The Rev. Ekram Kachu, pastor of First Arabic, serves as the Director of the AOC. A full rage of services – listed below – were offered, regardless of religion, tribal/ethnic background or nationality. During the COVID pandemic, in-person classes were suspended, but the AOC’s personal outreach increased, as many refugees and immigrants found themselves in crisis situations due to illness, job loss, lack of food and supplies, etc. The assistance provided by the AOC continues to be much-needed and often life-changing. The AOC plans to resume all in-person classes and activities in the fall of 2022.
AOC SERVICES & PROGRAMS
• Outreach Services include translation services, transportation to appointments and referrals to social service agencies in the community. Newcomers also receive assistance with food, clothing, household items, baby needs, etc.
• The Women’s Empowerment Group meets weekly to share experiences, practice English, ask questions, and learn about American culture. The women are learning to sew, making clothing for themselves and their families.
• The weekly Tutoring Program offers children of refugees and immigrants homework assistance, reading enrichment, social interaction, and dinner.
• Arabic Classes are held to help the children learn their mother tongue, but by popular demand, the weekly classes have expanded to include to anyone interested in learning the language – both children and adults.
